Family Health Center, formerly known as the Family Practice Center was established in 1969 to address: a shortage of doctors, lack of primary care access for the less fortunate population, and economic development issues. The charter group consisted of a coalition of business, political, and medical leaders pulling together to solve community problems. The McLennan County Medical Society was the original parentof the Center and continues oversightof all academic and research programs as the McLennan CountyMedical Education and ResearchFoundation (MCMERF). A second board, the Waco Family Practice Foundation (WFPF), composed of both physician and business leaders, oversees all capital assets and conducts development activities.Athird foundation, the Heart of Texas Community Health Center, Inc. (HOTCHC), created in 1998, supervises all clinical activities and operates as a Federally Qualified Health Center.
