High Plains Community Health Center was established in 1995 to address the need for primary health care in the Lamar, Colorado area. The center’s mission was to achieve excellence in providing accessible primary health care to the people of Southeast Colorado with particular concern for those who are unserved or underserved.
Since its founding, High Plains has grown from 5 employees to 70, becoming not only a major health care provider, but a major employer in a rural community. The center, designated as Federally Qualified Health Center and Migrant Health Center, has benefitted from community support as well as leadership continuity, and retains two of the original five staff members, Jay Brooke, Executive Director and Monette Rowan, Operations Officer.
The center has helped to transform the delivery of care in southeast Colorado.
